The proud history of Sri Lanka reveals that we have been a strong and healthy nation. The traditional life style, the consumption patterns and self-sufficient economy, has ¡immensely contributed to this strong healthy living style of our People. As the society become complex, the life style which was the basis of healthy living, started deteriorating.
This has led to various health hazards non-communicable diseases compared to communicable diseases.
The Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology, (CKDu) which is prevalent mainly in the dry zone of Sri Lanka is one such non communicable disease.
CKDu was first detected in 1990’s from the North Central Province the disease has spread to several other adjacent provinces such as Uva, North Western, North, Central and East.
In addition, Hambantota district in Southern Province, has also recorded some cases recently.
Districts wise, the disease is prevalent in 11 districts, i.e. Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Matale, Vavuniya, Badulla, Hanbantota, Ampara, Monaragala, Mullaittivu and Trincomalee, and has affected the people ¡n 60 Divisional Secretariats.
The Community screening for CKDu, conducted by the Ministry of Health in the Affected areas, till December 2015 revealed that there are 20,828 patients in those areas.
The number of CKDu patients identified (when coming to hospitals and during Ayuruedic clinics) can be more than the figure shown above.
Therefore, to prevent the disease, it is imperative to know the route cause of the disease.
Preparation of a National Plan for the Prevention of CKDu
The presidential Task Force for Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease, prepared a three Year National Plan for the prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease with the collaboration of all the relevant Ministries, Departments, various governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Three Year National Plan for Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology
The National Plan is a target oriented, huge program carried out with the active participation of several Ministries, Departments, Governmental and Non-Governmental organizations. It is drawn up under 08 main areas relevant to the prevention of Kidney Disease.
Priority is being given to 11 districts affected by the disease in the year 2016, Necessary facilities to the other 14 districts will be extended in 2017/2018 according to necessity.
This plan is expected to be carried out in National, Provincial, District, Divisional and Village levels.
At National Level, the Presidential Task Force and the relevant Ministries, and at Provincial Level the Provincial Ministries and other organizations will implement the plan according to their delegated subject areas.
In the implementation of the National Plan, at National and Provincial levels, it is expected to receive the cooperation of all district and provincial level governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Likewise, at village level, the village committees for Kidney Disease Prevention are expected to carry out the programs and the support of the village level Government officials and civil organizations are also expected.

The drafted National Plan for Prevention of Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology was set forth by His Excellency the President on 3Qth May 2016.
